Ireland's Joe Schmidt expects ‘spiky’ All Blacks encounter to decide world’s best

• Schmidt: side ‘will give as good as we get’ against New Zealand• Coach defends Bundee Aki’s right to represent IrelandTest rugby is no place for the faint-hearted. With this in mind, Joe Schmidt has predicted another “spiky” clash with the All Blacks which will, in the visitors’ minds at least, decide the mantle of the world’s best team.In their past three drama-filled Tests only three points separate the All Blacks and Ireland, the two top-ranked sides, but much of that engrossing recent history has faded to form a near singular focus on the brutality that punctuated their last match in Dublin. Farewell to Wayne Rooney brought cheers and a hymn to the new age | Barney Ronay

It was a slightly odd occasion and Rooney’s reappearance in an England shirt provided a reminder how much football has changedIn the end Wayne Rooney got the biggest cheer of the night. Which was, after all, the whole point. With 58 minutes gone there was a roar from the bleachers that almost became a full standing ovation as the crowd rose to clap and gawp, sucking the sweetness from the last of those big Rooney moments. He looked pretty much the same, just a little stiffer in this light and speedy England team. Rooney’s first act was to watch DeAndre Yedlin skim past him on the outside. He leaped for a couple of headers. A bit later a man in a red shirt ran on to the pitch and threw an arm around his shoulder before being led away by stewards, but nobody really seemed to mind much. Continue reading...

Slavisa Jokanovic deserved more time to transform Fulham’s fortunes | Eni Aluko

All too often the very manager who brought success is the one who makes way at the first bump in the roadThe fact we had entered November and not seen a single manager sacked in the Premier League made for a refreshing change. All too often, dismissals are made in a panic and without the long-term good of the club in question taken into proper consideration. This season it appeared a sense of calm and rational thinking had taken over. All managers seem to have been given time. That was until Wednesday, however, when Fulham sacked Slavisa Jokanovic and immediately announced Claudio Ranieri as his successor. Unfortunately, normal service has been resumed. Continue reading...

Ben Ryan: ‘If rugby were a company people would be comparing it to an Enron’

Fiji’s gold-medal winning sevens coach is unhappy with the direction he believes the game is moving in – from the treatment of tier-two nations to laws being overlooked by refereesIf you love rugby union what follows will be a tough read. According to one of the world’s leading coaches, however, the time has come for the sport to get real. “If rugby were a company people would be comparing it to an Enron,” says Ben Ryan, Fiji’s Olympic gold-medal winning sevens mastermind. “It’s completely dysfunctional.”Ryan’s charge sheet is long and chilling. With Japan set to visit Twickenham this weekend he says tier-two nations continue to be treated with almost feudal disregard, that the sport’s law-book is being wilfully ignored and that skilful players are becoming disillusioned with where 15-a-side rugby is heading. Central to it all, he believes, is the selfish decision-making of certain stakeholders which is steering the global game into deeply worrying territory. Continue reading...

Which football teams have worn most kit combinations in a season? | The Knowledge

Plus: huge gaps between victories in the same competition, winning the same title with multiple teams, and loose dentures. Mail [email protected] or tweet @TheKnowledge_GU“It appears that Fulham’s kit designer is having as bad a season as their defensive coach,” muses Richard Hilton. “Fulham have worn five different kit combinations in their first five away matches of the season (red/red; black/black; blue/blue; white/black; white/white). Is this a record?”It turns out Fulham’s kit designer still has a little more meddling to do, Richard. Here’s Chris Oakley. “I can confirm that they have some way to go yet! I’ve been creating some illustrations for Rochdale AFC’s official matchday programme, The Voice of Spotland, which show they had seven kits during the 1997-98 season. Two of them used elements of a kit worn two seasons before.” Continue reading...

It's time for troubled scion Brian France to let Nascar go

Nascar’s CEO always came off like he wanted no part of the family trade. As the season winds down, they’d be better off without himBrian France did not ask to be born into stock car racing’s first family. He did not ask to be the face of America’s most anachronistic sport. He did not ask for the mission of making Nascar great again. No, this is a life that holds him in thrall: it is not the path that he chose.Or at least that’s what the 56-year-old CEO and chairman of Nascar would have you believe, ever since his arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and illegal possession of a controlled substance back in August. The affair has hung over what has otherwise been a historic Nascar season (three drivers have combined for 20 of 35 wins). As police in New York’s Sag Harbor tell it they pulled over France for blowing through a stop sign and found him to be in an impaired state. It is alleged his blood-alcohol level returned a reading of 0.18, more than twice the New York state limit. An on-the-spot search dredged up five oxycodone pills. It was enough to land France in jail for the night. Continue reading...

Bold and brave Root century puts England back in the driving seat

England’s risky sweeping strategy pays off in second TestEngland 290 & 324-9; Sri Lanka 336. England lead by 278 runsA brave and brilliant century by Joe Root has given England the chance of a famous victory in a compelling Test match in Kandy. The England captain’s innings was brave not because he was ever in any physical danger – no pace bowler propelled a ball at him until the 55th over – but because the conception of this knock and the approach of the entire England lineup was so unusually bold and risky. They swept and they scurried and they swept again. Their first seven batsmen were all out sweeping, which can easily prompt old-timers to rail against the modern way. Thus they risked severe censure from the wise men in the boxes if their strategy failed abysmally. It did not. They have scored 324 for nine on what is regarded as a Bunsen burner, seldom seen in England (except at Ciderabad). Continue reading...
