Magnus Carlsen v Fabiano Caruana: World Chess Championship, Game 6 – live!

Carlsen and Caruana meet in Game 6 of championship matchCarlsen thwarts Game 5 ambush in draw (move-by-move report)Best-of-12-games match deadlocked at 2½-all after five drawsTweet Bryan at @BryanAGraham or email him 4.16pm GMT The pace has slowed considerably after the crisp opening act. Caruana has settled into a comfortably solid position following Carlsen’s promising start. The Norwegian thinks for five minutes before continuing with 18. Kf2, but now the American is on 10 minutes and counting. Symmetrical position with no apparent weaknesses anywhere on either side.It seems only apt that, in the year we mark 100 years since WW1, the world chess championship should consist of a remorseless grind of trench warfare, where weeks of battle result in neither player gaining or losing an inch of ground. #paintdrying 4.01pm GMT It took 15 moves before anything on either side involving the bishop (15. Bd3). Carlsen counters with 15. ... d5 and Carlsen comes back with 16. Nc2. Looking drawish entering the middlegame. The Fiver | The potential commercial benefits of honouring former heroes

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now!Almost two years to the day since he made his final appearance for England at Wembley, Wayne Rooney will make his final appearance for England at Wembley on Thursday, in what amounts to a testimonial for the 33-year-old striker. Rooney called time on his international career in 2017, but like a well-intentioned ex-con in a cliched heist movie has been talked into one last job. The grizzled old veteran will take his place among the substitutes in Gareth Southgate’s squad for a friendly against the USA! USA!! USA!!! so England fans can thank a loyal servant who played quite well in one major tournament England didn’t come close to winning, before playing quite badly in several others they also didn’t come close to winning. As an homage to an international career in which he earned 119 caps and scored 53 goals, Rooney will receive a guard of honour from both sets of players, come on as a substitute and take the captain’s armband from Fabian Delph. Farewell to Wayne Rooney brought cheers and a hymn to the new age | Barney Ronay

It was a slightly odd occasion and Rooney’s reappearance in an England shirt provided a reminder how much football has changedIn the end Wayne Rooney got the biggest cheer of the night. Which was, after all, the whole point. With 58 minutes gone there was a roar from the bleachers that almost became a full standing ovation as the crowd rose to clap and gawp, sucking the sweetness from the last of those big Rooney moments. He looked pretty much the same, just a little stiffer in this light and speedy England team. Rooney’s first act was to watch DeAndre Yedlin skim past him on the outside. He leaped for a couple of headers. A bit later a man in a red shirt ran on to the pitch and threw an arm around his shoulder before being led away by stewards, but nobody really seemed to mind much. Continue reading...

Which football teams have worn most kit combinations in a season? | The Knowledge

Plus: huge gaps between victories in the same competition, winning the same title with multiple teams, and loose dentures. Mail [email protected] or tweet @TheKnowledge_GU“It appears that Fulham’s kit designer is having as bad a season as their defensive coach,” muses Richard Hilton. “Fulham have worn five different kit combinations in their first five away matches of the season (red/red; black/black; blue/blue; white/black; white/white). Is this a record?”It turns out Fulham’s kit designer still has a little more meddling to do, Richard. Here’s Chris Oakley. “I can confirm that they have some way to go yet! I’ve been creating some illustrations for Rochdale AFC’s official matchday programme, The Voice of Spotland, which show they had seven kits during the 1997-98 season. Two of them used elements of a kit worn two seasons before.” Continue reading...

$100 to not see games? The Warriors' 'In the Building' pass is Silicon Valley in ticket form

Golden State games will be sold out for the foreseeable future, but they’ve discovered a new way to sell the experience: offering fans passes that don’t include a view of the courtThey say things are expensive in the Bay Area, but this is officially out of hand. The Golden State Warriors are now charging $100 for the privilege to not actually attend games. OK, technically you can watch the court with the team’s new “In the Building Pass”, but only from the television sets in the club areas at Oracle Arena. In the long line of Silicon Valley “innovations” that are just expensive variations on things that already exist, the Warriors have essentially reinvented the concept of “going to a sports bar”.Here’s how the “offer” works: fans get the opportunity to pay $100 for the ability to get into the arena for every home game. That’s basically all they get. They do not get a seat and they don’t even get a chance to see the game in person. Instead they can watch the action unfold on the various televisions at Oracle and, if they want, enjoy some ridiculously priced food and drink at the various bars and restaurants within. Yes, those who have a (non-transferable) pass are eligible for promotional giveaways. No, the offer doesn’t extend to the postseason. Continue reading...

What can we expect from the league Lions tour to New Zealand next year?

The Great Britain and Irish Lions are back after a 12-year hiatus to face Tonga, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Papua New GuineaBy Gavin Willacy for No Helmets RequiredSo farewell England, welcome back Great Britain – or maybe the Great Britain and Ireland League Lions. Anyway, after a damp squib finish to a handsome series win over the Kiwis, it seems England are to be mothballed for 23 months. An England XIII may play France or Wales next year and the RFL will send a team to the new Nines World Cup in Parramatta the weekend after the Super League Grand Final. But straight after that Great Britain will arrive in New Zealand to play Tonga, the Kiwis, Fiji and Samoa and come home via Papua New Guinea. Well, that’s the plan.Let’s be honest, the return of the Great Britain team is primarily a marketing move by the RFL, one based on exploiting the game’s rich heritage. I’m all for that, as are thousands of others. Richard Lewis suspended the League Lions after the 2007 series for good reasons. There was little sense in England only playing at World Cups, and Great Britain, this epic, touring legend, had stopped touring. Lewis promised to bring it back. The sabbatical has lasted 12 years. Ivan Rakitic: ‘We saw Football’s Coming Home and thought: yeah, but you still have to play us’

The Barcelona and Croatia midfielder talks about playing England at the World Cup with a virus, how to stay calm when taking penalties and post-tournament exhaustionIvan Rakitic packed his bag, kissed his family goodbye and said see you on the 15th. It was early June and he was not planning to be back until mid-July, four days after his daughter’s birthday. His wife, Raquel Mauri, told him he had better explain, so he made a promise: “I told her: ‘Don’t worry, when it’s over we’ll have a big party,’” he grins. “And I kept my word.” The day Althea turned five, he was still in Moscow. That night he called, wished her happy birthday and said sorry: daddy wasn’t coming home just yet. He had a World Cup final to play. Tommy Fleetwood piles pressure on Francesco Molinari in Race to Dubai

• Fleetwood shoots 67 at World Tour Championship• Molinari drops three shots on final six holes to fall backPerhaps a Race to Dubai will break out after all. Francesco Molinari’s advantage, of more than €1m over Tommy Fleetwood with just one event of the European Tour season to go, had looked unassailable until Friday. For Fleetwood, the equation is simple; he must win the DP World Tour Championship and hope his close friend finishes worse than a two-way tie for fifth.
